Susan Hill, author of The Woman in Black, is the greatest living writer of ghost stories, and here is a perfect chiller: a story of two damaged children filled with unease, the supernatural and horror.
The remote parts of the English Fens are forlorn, lost and damp even in the height of summer. At Iyot Lock, a large decaying house, two young cousins Leonora and Edward are parked for the summer with their ageing spinster aunt and her cruel housekeeper. At first the unpleasantness and petty meannesses appear simply spiteful, calculated to destroy Edward’s equanimity. But when spoilt Leonora is not given the dolly she wants for her birthday, affairs inexorably take a much darker turn with terrifying, life destroying consequences for everyone.
As ever, Susan Hill has conjured the perfect ghost story for winter nights by the fire. Just make sure you’re quite alone …
‘No one chills the heart like Susan Hill’ Daily Telegraph
‘Just as I say I don’t think I will ever have another idea for a ghost story,’ Susan says of her new book, ‘one pops up. Dolly popped into my head out of the blue, and as writing them is such a delight, I seized it gladly. It’s fantastic that Profile are rushing it out for this Autumn which of course means Hallowe’en and then Christmas, the traditional ghost story season, as well as the year of the record-breaking film of The Woman in Black.’
Susan Hill is the winner of numerous literary prizes including the Somerset Maugham award. She was awarded CBE for her services to literature earlier this year. Author of the Simon Serrailleur crime series and numerous other novels, her literary memoir, Howard’s End Is On The Landing, and the ghost stories The Man In The Picture and The Small Hand are published by Profile. The Woman in Black, which was has been running in the West End for over twenty years, and was a huge film in 2012, is published by Profile in hardback.
‘Susan Hill is the grande dame of English supernatural fiction’ Financial Times
Andrew Franklin, Profile MD says : ‘If it weren’t that her writing caused what little hair I have left to stand on end, a new book from Susan Hill would be pure unadulterated pleasure.’
Dolly by Susan Hill will be published by Profile books on Thursday 5 October 2012, price £9.99 hardback, ISBN 9781846685743.
